I’ve been playing around with acrylic paints lately, and made some greeting cards out of my painting experiments.

Trendy Ribbon Necklace

Necklaces with ribbon seem to be a bit trendy these days. For this one I used burgundy grosgrain ribbon and some light polyester chain in black color. I think it came out looking a little “Twilight” heh – like a little darkly romantic and vampiric. This necklace is not actually complete – I just tied the ribbon together, and so it’s not very secure. Should be fine to wear gently, but I may sew it together later.

I learned that grosgrain ribbon can be heat-sealed to prevent the ends fraying: that is how I finished the ribbons in this necklace, heat-sealed them over an open candle flame. Have to just pass the ribbon end through the flame very quickly, or the ribbon will scorch. I used to use clear nail polish to seal ribbon and cord ends, but heat sealing looks much nicer. I should learn more about how heat sealing works and what ribbons/cords that method can be used on.

Braided Ribbon Bracelet

Easy bracelet, just some braided burgundy-colored grosgrain ribbon. I used ribbons ends to finish it; they’re easy to use. Put a magnetic clasp on it and that makes it a perfect fit – it just snaps on. I added a little dangling mini-pendant / charm to the center, but it’s pretty without it too. The only problem is that the jump rings I used are a little delicate and weak – they’re prone to coming unfastened or warping. I might pick up some split rings or just stronger jump rings for it.

Mother’s “Birthstone” Necklace

I’ve been having fun with rhinestone-gluing projects recently, and made this necklace for my mom. It features Swarovski crystal rhinestones and bicones in colors that correspond to her kids’ birthstones: sapphire, blue zircon, amethyst, and crystal (diamond).

I put the pendant on a velvet ribbon which looks pretty modern, I think.

Mixed Metal wrap jewelry

Simple beaded jewelry. Mixed metal colors and assorted bead shapes. Extra long necklace can be wrapped like in the picture, or worn as a long (36 inch) double strand. Bracelet is three strands braided, on elastic with a clasp. Wrap twice for a bracelet, or it can be worn as a choker. I just put lobster clasps on both of these, but I kinda wish now that I’d used barrel or magnetic for the necklace.

Metrocard Charm Necklace

I made this choker necklace out of my old NYC subway metrocards. I punched the charms out of the cards using a 13/16 circle punch (available at Fusion Beads) and used a regular office hole punch for the holes. I was able to get 5 or 6 circles from each metrocard. The necklace is simple braided suede cord, with the charms attached by oval jump rings.
